Frangoulis is the first recipient of this distinction, which was established by the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Piraeus in collaboration with the postgraduate programme \u201cAmerican Studies: Politics, Strategy and Economics,\u201d with the aim of recognising individuals who make a substantial contribution to strengthening Greek-American friendship and cooperation. The award bears the name of the great philhellene Samuel Gridley Howe, who became closely associated with the Greek War of Independence and support for the Greek people, and who remains one of the most emblematic figures in Greek-American relations.<\/p>\n
The ceremony at the Hellenic Yacht Club was opened with a greeting by the Rector of the University of Piraeus, Professor Michalis Sfakianakis. This was followed by remarks from the United States Ambassador, Kimberly Guilfoyle, who referred to Frangoulis\u2019 long-standing contribution to the strengthening of Greek-American relations and his role as President of the International Propeller Club, making special mention of his contribution to the further rapprochement of the maritime communities of Greece and the United States, while also warmly thanking him for their…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
