A significant step towards the development of Greece’s domestic biomethane market is approaching, with the first compressed biomethane production plant in the country, developed by DEPA Commercial in cooperation with Farma Chitas at the latter’s facilities in Filippiada, set to begin trial operations shortly.
The biomethane produced will be used as a transport fuel (bio-CNG), expanding the availability of renewable fuels through DEPA Commercial’s FISIKON network of filling stations. According to a company announcement, this development follows the issuance of the country’s first installation permit for a biomethane production plant, under Law 5215/2025 and the Regulation on the Installation and Operation of Biomethane Production Plants, marking a major milestone in the implementation of the new regulatory framework.
The project
The project involves upgrading biogas into high-purity biomethane, followed by its compression and storage for use as a transport fuel (bio-CNG). The pilot project is particularly significant for Greece’s domestic energy market, as it lays the groundwork for harnessing a renewable energy source and integrating it into existing energy infrastructure.
The compressed biomethane produced will be available through DEPA Commercial’s FISIKON filling stations, expanding the use of renewable fuels in the transport sector. As a renewable fuel, biomethane can offer significant greenhouse gas emissions savings compared with conventional fuels,…
