The Samuel Gridley Howe Award for Greek-American Friendship and Cooperation was awarded to the President of the International Propeller Club and the Propeller Club of Piraeus, Costis Frangoulis, in the presence of the United States Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle.
Frangoulis is the first recipient of this distinction, which was established by the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Piraeus in collaboration with the postgraduate programme “American Studies: Politics, Strategy and Economics,” with the aim of recognising individuals who make a substantial contribution to strengthening Greek-American friendship and cooperation. The award bears the name of the great philhellene Samuel Gridley Howe, who became closely associated with the Greek War of Independence and support for the Greek people, and who remains one of the most emblematic figures in Greek-American relations.
The ceremony at the Hellenic Yacht Club was opened with a greeting by the Rector of the University of Piraeus, Professor Michalis Sfakianakis.
