Inflationary pressures have accelerated in the market during the second quarter of the year.

According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority, price increases were recorded in food products in April amid the strong likelihood of further escalation in the coming months. The “Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages” index rose by 4.4% year-on-year, acting as a key driver of headline inflation, which reached 5.4%.

An analysis of the individual categories confirms that inflationary pressures have spread to the core of the market, with fresh products and staple food items posting double-digit increases, limiting businesses’ ability to absorb higher costs.

Comparison with the Eurozone highlights a notable divergence. In April, harmonized inflation in the “Food, Alcohol and Tobacco” category in Greece stood at 4.1%, compared with just 2.5% for the European average.

This gap is mainly attributed to energy costs, with the relevant index in Greece reaching 21.9%, versus 10.9% across Europe, placing a disproportionate burden on the domestic supply chain.

Final consumer prices are also being directly affected by conditions in primary production, where inflationary pressures remain strong. According to February 2026 data, the Agricultural Input Price Index maintained its upward trajectory, reflecting increased costs for energy and critical raw materials such as fertilizers.
