Greece and Italy are set to sign an Implementing Arrangement on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, formally activating Greece’s programme for the acquisition of two Italian FREMM frigates of the Bergamini class. The signing will take place in Rome in the presence of Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto and the naval chiefs of the two countries.
The Implementing Arrangement will be signed by Greece’s General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments and its Italian counterpart, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Letter of Intent for the acquisition of the Italian FREMM frigates signed on September 29, 2025, in La Spezia, Italy, during a meeting between Dendias and Crosetto.
The agreement will finalise the legal, financial and technical terms for the acquisition of the first two Bergamini-class FREMM frigates.
Specifically, it will determine:
– The value of the two ships in their current condition, as well as the timetable for their transfer and integration into the Hellenic Navy: Carlo Bergamini (F-590) is to be transferred in the first half of 2028, while Virginio Fasan (F-591) is to be transferred in the first half of 2029.
– Initial and follow-up support to ensure the vessels’ operational availability.
– Greek industrial participation, with Greek shipyards involved in maintenance work and the integration of new systems aboard the ships.
